1st and 2nd grade students will participate in the Accelerated Reader program. Your child will take quizzes on the books that they have read at their AR level. These quizzes check how well they understand what they read, earning them points as they pass each comprehension quiz. Your child will have a point goal for each nine weeks determined by their performance on the STAR reading assessment and their teacher. Students may take up to 2 tests per day. They should average at least 80% correct on quizzes. In addition, students who reach this goal or extend their point goals earn a reward and will be acknowledged at a grade level celebration! Throughout the year students will earn “brag tags” from their teacher and prizes from the library for reaching different point levels.
AR tests can be taken on books from Westside’s library, the public library, or home. To check the AR level of books you already have at home, go to www.arbookfind.com. It is important that children read at their reading levels to build fluency and comprehension. Students are only allowed to take tests on books within their current point range. This range will increase throughout the year.
Students will bring home an AR folder to keep a record of the books they have read and taken tests on. Please help you child fill in the book title and AR level when they are ready for a test. If you have any questions about the AR reading program please do not hesitate to contact me at school.
