Story Time with Mrs. Johnson 4/17/20
I made a YouTube video! Check out this new book: If I Build a School.
"Library Lesson" for Wednesday 3/25/20
When I plan a lesson for my Westside students I usually begin and end with a song (bonus points if it gets kids up and moving!). Today I found another great Awnie's House read aloud. She is reading one of our new library books called We Don't Eat Our Classmates. For my students that love nonfiction, I am also including a link to a National Geographic for Kids page about real dinosaurs. Enjoy! I love and miss you - Mrs. Johnson

In the book, Last Stop on Market Street, CJ complains about the bus ride but his grandmother helps him find joy in the journey. When we are being Proactive, we choose our attitude and actions. (I also added the song Wheels on the Bus; just for fun!)

Any book by Mo Willems is always a big hit in the library with everyone from PreK-2nd grade! This one is especially funny and sweet. Piggie and Gerald are a great example of what good friends should be. I am also including a drawing lesson from Mo Willems himself!

This book is a favorite with Westside's 2nd grade students. See how a "bad seed" changes his attitude and actions. (Habit 1 Be Proactive - I choose my attitudes, moods, and actions.)

The main character, Harvey Moon, did not Put First Things First and now he can't watch TV until his room is clean. Enjoy this funny story and listen for the rhyming words!

The mission of our library is to provide a welcoming environment with a diverse collection of materials, cultivate a school environment that celebrates reading, and collaborate with teachers to plan effectively. The library media center collection supports the school’s curriculum which is based on the Alabama Course of Study.
The library media center operates on a flexible schedule. It is open each day from 7:45 am to 2:45 pm. Students are welcome to visit the library each day for check-out. Flexible scheduling allows the use of the library at the point of need by individuals, groups, and /or classes. They may come individually or with their class.
In addition, all Pre-K and Kindergarten classes are scheduled for story-time once a week. I help our youngest students develop positive associations with reading and libraries. First and Second Grade classes come to the library for lessons once a month. During these lessons, I expose students to different authors and book genres.  I also incorporate reading comprehension skills, such as main idea and context clues. With all classes, I guide students to find examples of the 7 Habits of The Leader in Me within the library books we are reading.
